Liz Toonkel (born Chappaqua, NY) is a Production Designer and Artist. She earned her BFA at New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts in Film & Television Production with a minor in Gender & Sexuality and holds a dual MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Art & Technology and Scenic Design.
As a Production Designer, she has designed 10 feature films, multiple television shows and pilots, commercials and music videos. She has worked with numerous talented film directors including Janicza Bravo, Frank Coraci, Zackary Drucker, Catherine Hardwicke, Anna Rose Holmer, Alex Ross Perry and Adam Salky. Her collaboration with Joe Swanberg, Digging For Fire, premiered at Sundance 2015 and he named her 1 of 5 filmmakers to watch in Flavorwire after she collaborated as a writer/performer with him on IFC’s Young American Bodies. She has production designed content for Comedy Central, E!, Fox Sports, MTV, NBC, The CW & many other media outlets.
She recently performed and displayed her artwork at Honor Fraser Gallery, LAX Festival, Perform Chinatown and the 2016 Queer Biennial in Los Angeles. Her films have played at various film festivals including Indie Memphis and the Portland Women’s Film Festival as well as galleries all over the world. She has been a resident at Automata, PAM, The Marble House Project and the Transart Institute in Berlin.
Liz also works as a stylist and recently styled many prominent drag queens such as Alaska, Blair St. Clair, Jiggly Caliente, Jinx Monsoon, Katya and Sharon Needles.
When she’s not designing or making art she performs magic and is a member of the Academy of Magical Arts.
